Meet the Experts

Brett Ramirez is the interim director of the Egg Industry Center and an associate professor in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University. He leads an integrated research and extension program focused on ventilation design and management, climate physiology, mass mortality management, and several other topics related the swine and layer facilities. His mission is to provide and advance the science and technology needed to address the aforementioned areas in animal production systems. Through mentoring students on fundamental and applied research projects, his program further aims to generate practical solutions to current and emerging issues surrounding animal agriculture and its producers.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Susan Watkins is retired from the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. Dr. Watkins earned her Ph.D. in Poultry Nutrition from the University of Arkansas before joining the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science faculty as an extension specialist. During her 22-year career, she assisted the poultry industry all over the U.S. and the world with identifying, quantifying, and correcting drinking water challenges. Dr. Watkins also conducted nutritional supplement research, evaluated bedding materials, floor sanitation procedures, litter amendments for salmonella control, and darkling beetle control. She also taught poultry production and managed the internship program.

Ashley Mason has a veterinary degree from St. George’s University and a Masters in Avian Health and Medicine from the University of Georgia. With experience working at Butterball and Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative, she gained knowledge in turkey health, animal welfare, and biosecurity. Currently a poultry veterinarian at Gaydos Technical Services providing veterinary and technical support to the poultry industry, Ashley enjoys spending time with her daughter and tending to her goat farm in her free time.

Paige Rohlf is the Director of Research and Development for Aviagen Turkeys Inc., responsible for managing the breeding program and pedigree populations of turkeys. This includes monitoring genetic progress, investigating new technology to collect data, and implementing new traits to include in the breeding goal. Paige is also responsible for managing internal and external trials to monitor and understand bird performance in the field. Paige graduated from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master of Science in Animal Breeding. Paige has worked for Aviagen since 2011. She lives in Lewisburg with her husband, Justin and their two children, Jemma and Calvin.

Dr. Dan Wilson established Wilson Veterinary Co. to serve the needs of poultry producers who do not have access to veterinary services. Before starting the practice, Dr. Wilson was the Corporate Veterinarian and Director of Nutrition for Rose Acre Farms. He attended Purdue University, receiving his B.S. in Animal Sciences and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Wilson serves as the American Association of Avian Pathologist liaison to United Egg Producers (UEP) and serves on UEP’s Scientific Advisory Committee. Dr. Wilson’s resides outside of Indianapolis, where he lives with his wife, two children, and 2 doodles. When not working with poultry, Dr. Wilson enjoys following Purdue sports, officiating club swimming, and camping with family and friends.
